Many photos of a trooper with a dog can be found prior to 1934, when the State Police officially purchased and trained canines. (Blood hounds) It is this writers opinion that the dogs were either owned by the individual trooper or just tagged along, as the troopers went on patrol by horseback. They were more than likely a welcome companion during the long lonely travel along the states byways. The dog also acted as a deterrent for anyone who might want to wish the trooper harm, alert him to hidden danger along the road and serve as an alarm while he slept.
